Antipsychotic Treatment Approaches in Schizophrenia Spectrum and Other Psychotic Disorders: Prescription Patterns in Eight Different Diagnostic Groups

Posted September 17, 2025

This study examined real-world prescribing patterns of antipsychotic medications in nearly 60,000 patients across eight diagnostic groups with psychotic features, including schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, psychotic bipolar disorder, psychotic depression, delusional disorders, acute transient psychosis, organic delusional disorder, and substance-induced psychosis.

The authors suggest that patients with schizoaffective disorder might benefit from greater use of LAIs and clozapine, and that treatment approaches for psychotic depression may not be making full use of LAI options. They recommend further research on the comparative effectiveness of antipsychotics across these diagnostic groups.
