This literature review examines the comparative effectiveness of long-acting injectable (LAI) and oral antipsychotic medications in the treatment of schizophrenia. Drawing on clinical trials, real-world studies, and systematic reviews, the paper evaluates differences in treatment adherence, relapse prevention, hospitalization, quality of life, safety, and healthcare costs. Findings suggest that while both formulations offer comparable clinical efficacy, LAIs are associated with improved treatment continuity and reduced hospitalization in real-world settings, particularly among patients at risk of nonadherence. The review also explores implementation challenges, patient preferences, and the importance of individualized treatment selection in improving long-term outcomes.
